A photographic history of fashion, culture, and transformation
Inventing Style
Photographs by Jennifer Graylock
The premise
Style is not found. It is invented.
For more than three decades, Jennifer Graylock has photographed the people, performances, and private moments that shape fashion’s public imagination. Inventing Style brings those images together—a vivid record of creativity in motion, seen from a singular point of view.

The image—and the moment around it.

Jennifer Graylock
Jennifer Graylock has spent more than three decades photographing the people, ideas, and moments that shape culture—often before anyone realized just how influential they would become.
An award-winning photographer with an artist’s eye, an MBA, and an instinct for recognizing what matters, Graylock has photographed fashion, celebrities, designers, artists, and cultural originals from New York Fashion Week and the Met Gala to intimate portraits far from the spotlight. Her photographs have appeared around the world, but her approach has always remained surprisingly simple: look closely, stay curious, and never assume the obvious picture is the most interesting one.
That instinct became the foundation for Inventing Style. When Graylock photographed New York’s drag artists in the 1990s, she saw more than extraordinary personalities and unforgettable images. She saw creativity in motion—artists experimenting with fashion, beauty, identity, and self-expression in ways the mainstream would eventually embrace.
Photographer, author, visual storyteller, and keen observer of culture, Graylock has built her career on curiosity, connection, and an ability to recognize a great story—sometimes years before the rest of the world catches up.
